Question about warranty on gears

Postby pugpower » Sat May 08, 2010 6:44 pm

Before I order gears and installation kit I have a question. A garage I work with is giving me the option to get the gears and install kit if I can beat their price. Your website price (especially with the free shipping) is better than theirs. I am still having these professionally installed, how would the warranty work if there are any problems with the parts? I am obviously not anticipating any problems as Motive gears are well known, but would it be better to have the garage order the stuff, or would that make no difference as far as protection for me should something not be right?

Thanks,

Sam

There is a one year manufacturer warranty on Motive Gear that covers manufacturer defects, but not overheating from improper break-in or low oil or improper installation. This is a fairly standard warranty that most gear manufacturers use, albeit with different lengths of time stated.

When buying gears that you are going to bring to an installer, we always recommend using the brand gear that the installer recommends. This will bring up their confidence and comfort, so that if something goes wrong on the installer's end they don't use the "That's why I don't usually use that brand gear" excuse.

Properly installed, a new gearset should be reasonably quiet (less than that you would expect from other normal transmission, alternator, belts, pumps, etc.) Properly broken in and with the lubrication maintained, they should stay quiet. If a gear is quiet initially and gets alarmingly louder over time, either the bearings weren't preloaded properly or the gear has worn prematurely from improper break-in or a lubrication problem. If it is noticeably noisy the first time you drive, the gear has not been setup properly. If you re-setup a gear before breaking it in, it can be usually be saved. But, driving almost any length of time on an improperly setup gear will permanently wear that bad setup into the face of the gear leaving it unable to ever be reset.

This is a lot more information than your original question asked, but all relevant to your situation for your consideration.
