ford 2000 550 rear

Postby terry duane » Wed May 05, 2010 7:01 pm

In changing my Ford f550 from a 4:88 to 4:10 the parts received work except the carrier. The speedometer ring indicator is 1/2 inch smaller than the housing of the carrier sent to me.But the bigger problem is the spider gears, The case I have does not split where the shaft of the gears comes through the case as does the one I received. These numbers were on the carrier I have. 51252 3100 3236 Jerry was very helpful, Please let me know if there is any other information you may need.

Terry,

We will be in contact with Spicer tech, and will get back as soon as we have an answer. Would it be possible to post a couple of pictures of the differences in the areas you have described in the meantime?

The Spicer tech is also requesting the for the original tag# information from the data plaque. If you were able to take a legible picture of the model #'s we can forward that to them also.

At this point, it seems that you may have a factory limited-slip or locker instead of a standard open carrier. If you were able to modify the ABS ring/sensor to fit, it may be as simple as just getting a set of open spider gears to load the case.

If we can get some of the information and/or pics as requested we will have a clearer idea of how to proceed.

Terry,

We found a part number for the same type of traction differential as your original (it is a TrueTrac made by Eaton/Spicer), but have not found anyone in the network that has it in stock as of yet. We received your pictures late yesterday confirming what we though about the carrier type, and will continue to work on it today.

A tech at one of our suppliers also asked to make sure that the ring gear bolt holes lined up and are the proper size to accomodate the new ring gear bolts on the original case, and to make sure that all bearings were the same dimensions (old & new).

... still trying to find the elusive Truetrac for the 4.10. Eaton/Spicer has it under contract with Ford so we are trying to find it from an outside vendor.

The open spider gear set & Detroit Locker are readily available in a worst case scenario, but if we can get exactly what you want within the next day or so, we would like to try to find the original style Truetrac with the proper offset for the new ratio for you.

The new bearings will work with the new carrier,But inside diameter is diffrent from the old carrier.race on the old carrier is bower 3920,bearing bower b984.There wasn't new bolts for the ring gear in the package but if the pinion will clear a hex head I can pick up bolts locally for the old ring gear was riveted. Thanks, Terry

Here is the final score (for now):

The limited-slip unit that would fit the ratio change to 4.10 exists, but we cannot purchase it because it is on contract (probably a Spicer/Ford agreement). No one in our purchasing network has, or can get it at this time. It very well may be that it would have to be purchased direct through Ford's commercial fleet division.

Here is a vendor information sheet listing with the unit you are looking for at the top:

Open spider gears will drop in what you have now, but would not be limited-slip like the original. Also, the ABS tone ring mounting would still need to be modified to fit.

If you want to do the open spider gear option, we can send them to you as a 'no charge' item. Same thing with the ring gear nut & bolt kit.

If you can find the Truetrac for the 4.10 ratio, we will definitely take back the new open case and issue full credit.

Thanks for your patience, and we will wait for you to tell us how to proceed.

With your information, I found the correct carrier. After installing the carrier with your 4:10 gear, my truck runs great. Please give me information on how to return the incorrect carrier. Thank you,
Terry

If you can pack it back in the original box, and preferably put that in another box for shipping, we will send UPS with a return label to bring back for full credit. If it is not ready, or at the original shipping location, UPS will leave the tag until you are ready to send it back.

If at all possible, we would like to get the contact information or company name for the supplier that you used to get the new Truetrac, as we had a hell of a time locating one through all our existing suppliers.

Glad that it all worked out eventually!
